Tips For Volleyball Beginners

My first time to join a volleyball team, was a school team. I was 14, in form two at GAMCO somewhere in Tororo.

Volleyball is quite simple to learn once all your attention is driven to that—learning it.

It took me a couple of weeks to learn the basics, say reception, service, rotation, and some starting rules. And since then I have learnt a lot but still learning though. Everyday, every game, training and team meetings, I learn something new. So learning never ends, even the pro players like Yuji, Neo and more will tell you the same thing. There’s that something they’ll discover and train hard to learn it and another will come up. So they’re looped in it.

However am not here to drive you through my volleyball life. So we’ll start right away.

Being a newbie is quite humiliating and if you’re not committed that deep, you can easily give up. Many people fear to be taken as beginners and the command of correction during game tryouts may feel as though taking it out on them. But yes, it’s taken out on you, because you know little and skilled at nothing. So first of all you should figure out what’s essential in adaptation of the game, is it the game-run knowledge or the skills ?

And believe me 80 percent of the game players will tell you it’s the game knowledge they acquired first. It’s understanding how the game runs that matters. How many players are needed on court ?, what is the role of each particular player ? What are the rules that govern the game-run. And once you realize and learn all this, then you’re good to go.

I mean on the game but yet not to play.

So I realize I did talk of rules, the official rules from an official body, not just rules. FIVB Federation for International Volleyball , is a body that officiates the game in the whole world.  Though you might find other game bodies like Olympics having almost the same rules with or without changes doesn’t matter to you now, what matters is the FIVB. And you can look up their site here for the rules and you can download a pdf format.

This pdf contains all the theory you need to learn from court dimensions and set up to refereeing basics.

Once you feel you’ve understood what’s it with the rules, you can head to a volleyball club as a spectator to make sure what you understood, went in the right way and it will help you understand more of the rules you couldn’t understand easily.

Done with rules? If yes then you’re good-ready for the basic skills. The reception, setting, attacking, defense and service is all you need to get started. You can with one at a time for example you can start with reception, which means receiving the ball from either your colleague or opponent. And then head to service, that’s the first crossover of the ball over the net each time a point is made. And so on. This may sound timely but yeah it may take you a month or less depending on your devotion.

If you can’t get yourself a physical coach, you can head to YouTube and search through a bulk to get one that will work for you and subscribe.

Choosing a right channel or coach won’t be that easy but I prefer, you search up “how to serve volleyball” and go through several videos, the quality of the video doesn’t matter, what matters is the skill and the explanation given.
